ALPE DEVERO

The Veglia Devero Natural Park, reachable using the Pronto Bus service (click here for timetables) or in about 20 minutes by car from Vecchio Scarpone, represents one of the most beautiful and evocative landscapes in the Alps. Located between the Antigorio, Divedro and Formazza, it is easily accessible, full of elements of interest and well-equipped for excursions in direct contact with nature.

Both Veglia (4,120 hectares) and Devero (6,674 hectares) consist of large basins of glacial origin, surrounded by the peaks of the Lepontine Alps. Both areas are characterized by a typical high mountain landscape, with forests of larches, hook pines and spruces that reach up to over 2,000 meters above sea level. In the undergrowth, carpets of rhododendrons and blueberries.

The extensive pastures of cattle (especially the Alpine brown breed), the result of a thousand-year-old rural civilisation, constitute a fundamental component of the landscape. The whole area is rich in streams, rivers and numerous alpine lakes. As far as fauna is concerned, we go from listening to the whistles of the marmot to seeing the hovers of the golden eagle, to the sighting of ibex, chamois, white hares, stoats, badgers and squirrels. The entire area is populated by the rare black grouse, the common frog and the alpine newt.

The network of marked paths is vast and includes both itineraries suitable for simple hikers and others dedicated to real mountaineers. 3 nature trails have been set up in Alpe Veglia and 1 in the Devero protection area. These are easy-to-follow itineraries, organized with observation stages equipped with explanatory panels to facilitate reading of the environment from a geological, morphological, botanical and animal life.
